The Hildegaertschool in Rotterdam is the most energy efficient elementary school in the Netherlands. The creation of this high ambition goes hand in hand with an excellent educational environment and a high quality indoor environment.
The school is on the site of the 60 school and Church at the heart of the mill quarter neighborhood in Hillegersberg formed. With the construction and function of the community school this position is updated again. The design of the building intervenes on this particular position; manipulation in the axes of teh building create views over the grounds and through the building. The building is divided into 3 subvolumes which contain a group of classes (group 1-2, 3-5 and 6-8); on top of that is a gymnasium. The volumes are shifted from each other in such a way that the facadeopenings and roof lights bring lots of light deep into the building. This light is used to create a common heart per group of classes.
Despite the presence of three main users in the building, which can use the building independently, the design is made so that the mutual separations are felt nowhere; on the contrary, school, Babysitting/Child Services, playgroup and sports strengthen each other’s presence and highlicht the spatial characteristics and dynamics of the building.
Additional project data: most energy-efficient elementary school of the Netherlands. GPR score: 9.1. It proofed that an energy-efficient building (energy 8.9) may be accompanied by a high score on comfort (health 9.6). The ambitions of the school to have an energy-efficient building with a comfortable indoor climate are amply met. Not insignificant is that all these extra ambitions are realized within the budget set by the VNG for primary school buildings.
