Nieuwe Markt 1a
In 2010 (designed by) Erick van Egeraat received the assignment for the renovation, restoration and re-design of the former City Library of Rotterdam for Erasmus University College. In the design for the Erasmus University College by (designed by) Erick van Egeraat, the original building as well as the qualities of the original interior have been restored to their original glory to make it more suitable for contemporary education in terms of appearance, interior and (technical) functionality.
Erick van Egeraat reveals and restores the exceptional beauty of this building, with its generous decorations, coffered ceilings, wood paneling, natural stone elements, sculptures and stained glass that had been fully concealed behind gypsum board walls and lowered ceilings for decades. In addition to restoration works, Erick van Egeraat adds suitable, but decidedly contemporary elements to make this a faculty that meets the design brief and current standards.
The core of the building has an elegant atrium with glass walls, and a glass roof, to allow transparency, whereas the atrium also provides an overview of all floors. Since the Erasmus University College is being used by over 600 students and 80 university employees, with a small-scale teaching approach, peaceful, neutral colors for floors, walls and ceilings were chosen in the design. Only in the selection of the furniture an extra theme colour (yellow, green and red) is applied on each floor.
The Erasmus University College is a subtle transformation that allows this monument to be re-activated, and represents an outstanding asset to the Erasmus University and the city of Rotterdam.
